Fall is one of the most beautiful—and peaceful—times to explore the best hikes to enjoy fall colors in North Lake Tahoe. As summer crowds disappear and cooler temperatures arrive, the forests and mountain meadows begin taking on shades of gold, yellow, and orange.

Tahoe Meadows

For an easy introduction to Tahoe's fall scenery, start at Tahoe Meadows along the Mount Rose Highway. The approximately 1.3-mile loop is an easy, high-elevation walk through an alpine meadow, making it a good choice for families and casual hikers. As autumn approaches, look for changing foliage along the meadow and surrounding forest.

Mount Rose Trail

For spectacular fall scenery combined with panoramic views, Mount Rose is a favorite. The trail climbs through forest and open mountain terrain before reaching expansive views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra. The higher elevation means autumn color can arrive earlier here than at lake level. This is a more strenuous hike, so bring plenty of water, layers, and sturdy footwear.

Paige Meadows

Located just outside Tahoe City, Paige Meadows is one of the area's quieter choices for enjoying autumn foliage. The trail system winds through open meadows and forest, with aspen trees providing beautiful seasonal color. With several interconnected routes, hikers can choose a shorter walk or extend the outing.

Sugar Pine Point State Park

Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Lake Tahoe's west shore is another excellent destination for a fall hike. The park offers several trails ranging from easy walks to longer outings, with forests, meadows and lake views along the way. Local North Lake Tahoe tourism officials specifically identify Sugar Pine Point as one of the area's prime locations for fall foliage. On your way back to Incline, make plans to enjoy lunch on the lake at Sunnyside Resort on the West Shore! It's a local's favorite for all the right reasons.

Ellis Peak

If you're looking for a more challenging adventure, consider Ellis Peak Trail. The approximately 6.9-mile out-and-back hike rewards you with spectacular Lake Tahoe views while passing through beautiful Sierra forest. It's one of the North Lake Tahoe area's recommended fall-color hikes.

Tahoe Rim Trail at Brockway Summit

For an unforgettable combination of fall forest and big lake views, start at Brockway Summit and explore a section of the Tahoe Rim Trail. The trail climbs through forest above Tahoe Vista and offers sweeping views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains. You can hike a portion of the trail rather than committing to the entire long-distance route.

Make a Fall Hiking Day of It

September and October can be ideal months for hiking around North Lake Tahoe, but foliage timing varies by elevation and weather. Check current trail conditions before heading out, and remember that mountain weather can change quickly. Bring water, layers and a camera—and allow yourself plenty of time to stop and enjoy the scenery.
