Winter driving tips

All it takes is one visual like the one above to remind us to be prepared for what's to come. With the forecast calling for another snowy winter, it's time to get your car ready for a safe and successful drive to and from the Sierra.

To get you ready, we asked our staff at Sun Bear Realty and Property Management in Incline Village, Nevada, what their top tips are to ensure a safe experience.

Get your snow tires on now - whether you have 4-wheel drive or not. Be sure to check your tire pressure and have adequate treads for snowy conditions.

Practice putting chains on before you head out on the road.

Keep an extra rubber floor mat handy; they work well if you get stuck in a slippery spot and offer if/when chains are required.

Check the antifreeze level and be sure you have more in store for the balance of the winter, and while you are at it, check all fluids and your battery as well.

Prepare a Winter Road Kit to keep in your car throughout the season. Include:

  • Large Wool blanket
  • Water
  • Snacks (do not leave them in the car overnight!)
  • Flashlight (with extra batteries)
  • Candle and matches (which works wonders to warm your car when the heater is off)
  • Jumper cables
  • Portable shovel
  • Ice scraper
  • Warm clothes and Gortex gloves
  • Cell phone charger
  • First Aid Kit

AND, if you are planning a vacation to the Lake, now is the time to book your lakefront vacation rental, large family home for rent or cozy cabin to rent in Incline Village. See our full listing of vacation homes to rent in Lake Tahoe right here!
