Whether you have a passion for the history of yachting and wooden boats, or just love a day of sailing on a lake, you’ll appreciate the camaraderie that exists throughout the High Sierra.  It is here where there are many well-established yacht clubs and sailing organizations overflow with those who have a collective appreciation for the lifestyle that is all a part of the Lake Tahoe and Truckee maritime community.

When we did our research on this subject, we were delighted to see so many organizations that offer every opportunity for residents and visitors alike to enjoy their fun and annual fanfare – speaking of which, don’t miss the signature event of the summer - Concours d’Elegance on Tahoe’s West Shore – coming our way in August!

And as boat enthusiasts ourselves, we’re always here to share our personal insight about where to float your boat so feel free to contact us at Sun Bear Realty and Vacation Rentals in Lake Tahoe   and we’ll see you out on the lakes!

WHERE TO FLOAT YOUR BOAT AT LAKE TAHOE

Tahoe City Yacht Club

With a full calendar of year-round events (yes, they even ski together) the Tahoe City Yacht Club has been in existence for the past 92 years and is growing every year.  These folks know how to do it right: every spring they gather for the Gin Fizz Summer Season Opener and “Blessing of the Fleet” in May, host and are hosts to the “finest boat show in the world” – the Concours d’ Elegance in August, and host speaker series, and sailing and power boating programs while the weather is in their favor.  In between, they also organize groups interested in golf, tennis, and bocce ball. For individual use, members have access to kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and a fleet of Pico, Sunfish and Laser sailboats

Add to that their ski trips, and parties for all ages, and you have a yacht club dedicated to fun for all, including the kids. Here’s a real bonus; they have reciprocity privileges which allow members to enjoy the hospitality of hundreds of other yacht clubs around the world.

South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club

Chartered in 1961, this very active maritime club “banded together for the purpose of mutual interest in the field of boating, education, and water safety.”  Much like their comrades to the north in Tahoe City, the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club offers year-round fun and fanfare for its members and friends.  It is a member of the Pacific-Inter-Club Yacht Association which welcomes members to participate in over 100 yacht clubs in Northern California.

They are famous for their year-round events that annually includes their Beach Clean Up Parties where locals who love to sail and boat join together for the one of the best environmental initiatives throughout Lake Tahoe.

 Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club

Sailing six months out of the year in Tahoe, with year-round racing in the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley and Richmond Midwinter races, the very active members of the Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club have been organized since 1968.   Today they continue to share their tales and travel together year-round.

Their weekly Beer Cup Races welcome one and all to join in the festivities every Wednesday night.  You don’t need a boat as there’s always a spot to have you help crew on the crystal-clear water of Lake Tahoe.

Before you head to any lake or stream in Lake Tahoe, please do your part to protect Lake Tahoe and plan ahead for mandatory boat inspections. Invasive species have devastating environmental and economic impacts on industries, communities, and native species populations and with your help we can keep our lakes and streams clean.
